International Day of Cooperatives, celebrated on the first Saturday of July, was officially proclaimed by the United Nations in 1995 and has been globally recognized since then. This day honors the cooperative movement’s vital role in building fair, sustainable communities and advances the ideals of democracy, solidarity, and economic inclusion.

History of International Day of Cooperatives

The cooperative movement’s roots date back to the 18th century—one of the earliest recorded co-ops emerged in Scotland on March 14, 1761. But it wasn’t until July 7, 1923, that the International Cooperative Alliance (ICA) first established International Cooperative Day.

Decades later, the UN joined in. On December 16, 1992, the UN General Assembly adopted resolution 47/90, declaring that from 1995 onward, the first Saturday in July would officially become International Day of Cooperatives, aligning with the ICA’s observance. Since then, the ICA and the UN’s Committee for the Promotion and Advancement of Cooperatives (COPAC) have themed and promoted the day annually. 1

Why is International Day of Cooperatives important?

At its heart, the day shines a light on how cooperatives—whether in agriculture, banking, housing, or health—anchor communities through democratic ownership and shared purpose. They aren’t just businesses; they’re social structures built on trust and mutual support, helping close inequality gaps and foster local resilience.

This day also reinforces cooperatives’ vital contributions toward the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals. With themes like “Cooperatives Build a Better World”, the movement emphasizes inclusive economic growth, climate action, decent work, and gender equality.

  • Celebrates democratic, member-led businesses worldwide
  • Highlights cooperatives’ role in community solidarity and resilience
  • Supports UN efforts on sustainable development and social justice
  • Encourages policy awareness and legal frameworks for coops
  • Reinforces cooperative values: equity, education, and ethical action

How to Celebrate International Day of Cooperatives

You can mark the day by exploring or joining a local cooperative—maybe a food co-op, credit union, or worker-owned cooperative. Attend a community event, fair, or open house to meet cooperative members and learn how they run democratically and ethically.

Another way is simply to spread the word—share stories of coops you love on social media, tag them with #CoopsDay, or host a small discussion group to explore how cooperatives impact your daily life. If you’re part of a coop, consider hosting a workshop or volunteer day—cooperation is best demonstrated through action.

  • Seek out a local cooperative and learn its story
  • Share inspiring co-op stories online with the hashtag
  • Attend or host a #CoopsDay community event or info session
  • Volunteer or spend a day participating in cooperative life
  • Advocate for supportive coop policies or share info with forums
