History of Iraq Independence Day
After World War I and the collapse of the Ottoman Empire, the territories of Basra, Baghdad and Mosul were placed under British administration as mandated territories under the League of Nations. In 1921 the Hashemite monarchy was established, with Faisal I as king, under British guidance.
On 3 October 1932, following the terms of the Anglo‑Iraqi Treaty signed in 1930, the Kingdom of Iraq officially ceased being a British mandate and obtained formal sovereignty. The country was admitted to the League of Nations under King Faisal I. The monarchy ruled until 1958, when a military coup abolished it and declared a republic.
