Bicycle Day – in fact, this holiday is not about bicycles. Bicycle Day, observed annually on April 19, commemorates a pivotal moment in psychedelic history: the first intentional LSD trip by Swiss chemist Albert Hofmann in 1943. This day is distinct from World Bicycle Day, which celebrates cycling on June 3.
The Origin of Bicycle Day
On April 19, 1943, Hofmann ingested 250 micrograms of lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD) to explore its effects. As the substance took hold, he experienced intense perceptual changes and, due to wartime restrictions on automobile use, embarked on a bicycle ride home through the streets of Basel, Switzerland. This journey became the first documented LSD trip, marking a significant event in the study of psychedelics. 1
