In honour of Eleven09 Day, observed on November 9, we recognise the contributions of military veterans and support their transition into civilian work and life.

History of Eleven09 Day

Eleven09 Day was established in memory of an ambush on November 9, 2007, when six soldiers from the 1st Platoon, Chosen Company, 2-503rd, 173rd ABCT in Afghanistan were killed. In response to this tragedy, the organisation named Eleven09 was set up to help veterans apply the leadership and life-skills they acquired in the military to meaningful civilian careers.

Why is Eleven09 Day important?

This day matters because it draws attention to the ongoing challenge many veterans face when transitioning from military service to civilian employment and life. It emphasises that their skills—discipline, leadership, teamwork—are valuable beyond uniformed service. It also encourages businesses, communities and individuals to support veterans in practical ways, honour their service and recognise their continuing contributions.

  • It honours veterans’ service and sacrifices.
  • It supports the idea that veterans have valuable skills for civilian workplaces.
  • It raises awareness of the need for veteran-transition programs.
  • It inspires communities to build inclusive opportunities for former service members.
  • It celebrates the strength and resilience of veterans beyond their military roles.

How to Celebrate Eleven09 Day

Since Eleven09 Day focuses on veterans’ transition and support, it’s fitting to celebrate the day—by actively showing appreciation and enabling meaningful engagement for veterans. One way is to host or take part in local events that engage veterans and civilian communities together. Another is to review hiring or mentorship practices in your workplace or network to ensure veteran integration is supported.

  • Invite a veteran to share their story at your workplace or community group.
  • Volunteer or donate to a local veteran-support organisation.
  • Review or promote job-opportunities and internships aimed at veterans.
  • Use social media to share thanks and stories with the hashtag #Eleven09Day.
  • Encourage or participate in a mentorship initiative pairing veterans with civilian job-mentors.
