Extra Mile Day (November 1) is an annual observance dedicated to recognizing people who choose to “go the extra mile” in service, helping others, and taking initiative beyond what is expected.

History of Extra Mile Day

The day was established in 2009 by the nonprofit organization Extra Mile America, founded by Shawn Anderson, to inspire individuals, organizations, and communities to do more, think bigger, and act with purpose.
Since then, hundreds of US cities and mayors have issued proclamations recognizing November 1 as Extra Mile Day, in honor of volunteerism, civic engagement, and going above and beyond daily.

Why is Extra Mile Day important?

Extra Mile Day serves as a reminder that simple acts of extra effort can create ripples of positive change in workplaces, homes, and communities. It highlights how commitment beyond the baseline—whether in care, service, or innovation—can raise standards and strengthen relationships.
It also offers an opportunity to express gratitude to those who quietly serve without seeking recognition, and to motivate oneself to take initiative with optimism and purpose.

  • It encourages doing more than the minimum.
  • It honors individuals who support, uplift, or lead others in meaningful ways.
  • It builds awareness of how small gestures can have large impacts.
  • It promotes the idea that every person can contribute to positive change.
  • It strengthens community bonds by celebrating service and initiative.

How to Celebrate (or Observe) Extra Mile Day

On November 1, you can recognize the day by reflecting on where you or others can go “that extra mile” in your personal or professional life. Perhaps offer your time to support someone, volunteer locally, or speak up with an idea that makes a difference.
You might also thank someone who consistently does more than expected—send a note, publicly acknowledge them, or simply express your appreciation in a meaningful way.

  • Reach out to a colleague or friend and ask how you can help.
  • Volunteer for a cause or community event.
  • Spot someone who consistently goes above expectation and thank them.
  • Commit to a personal goal of making one extra effort—big or small.
  • Share your extra-mile story on social media with the hashtag #ExtraMileDay.
