Today we observe International Hug a Runner Day on November 20, a fun and supportive occasion to show appreciation for runners everywhere.

History of International Hug a Runner Day

The celebration originated around 2010 when Run The Edge founders Tim Catalano and Adam Goucher created what became known as “G.O.H.A.R.D.” (Globally Organized Hug a Runner Day) after being inspired by an earlier “Hug a Cross Country Runner Day” Facebook event.
From the first official celebration in 2011, the day has grown into a global moment of encouragement—runners and walkers are celebrated, and the focus is as much on community, kindness and recognition as it is on physical activity.

Why is International Hug a Runner Day important?

This day matters because it acknowledges the effort, dedication and perseverance of runners—not just those competing but anyone who laces up and moves forward. Recognising that pursuit fosters a culture of encouragement and mutual respect in what can sometimes feel like an individual sport.
It also provides an opportunity to connect the running community with broader social impact. Over the years the G.O.H.A.R.D. challenge has included charity components, showing that running and community support can go hand in hand.

  • It offers a moment to say thank-you to runners in our lives.
  • It encourages shared celebration of movement and health.
  • It helps break down the “solo runner” mindset by promoting community gestures.
  • It links running to acts of kindness and charity.
  • It reminds us that encouragement matters, even outside of performance or competition.

How to Celebrate (or Observe) International Hug a Runner Day

On this day you can join in by reaching out in simple, genuine ways to runners you know—or even those you don’t. A hug isn’t required (always ask or use a high-five if more comfortable), but the message of appreciation is. You could also participate in a run or walking event or commit some minutes to moving with someone else. Many communities or running groups mark the day with special group runs or outreach.
Beyond the physical gesture, consider using the day to support a charity linked to running, or simply share encouragement on social media with hashtags like #InternationalHugARunnerDay or #GOHARD to spread recognition far and wide.

  • Offer a sincere compliment to a friend who’s a runner.
  • Join a local run or walk with a friend or group.
  • Share a social-media post acknowledging a runner’s effort.
  • Volunteer or donate to a running-related charity.
  • Invite a runner you know for a post-run coffee or snack.
