History of Black Entrepreneurs Day
The observance was launched in 2020 by entrepreneur and investor Daymond John in collaboration with investors, mentors and organizations focused on empowering Black-owned businesses. The first live event, held on October 24 of that year, featured prominent speakers, mentorship sessions and grants to support entrepreneurs. Over subsequent years the day has grown into a hybrid of live, broadcast and online events that serve as both celebration and education.
Why is Black Entrepreneurs Day important?
What makes this day truly meaningful is that it confronts economic inequality with action and celebration. In a business landscape where access to capital, networks and resources has often been unequal, recognizing and uplifting Black entrepreneurs matters not just for individuals but for communities. The day reminds us that when Black-owned businesses thrive, jobs grow, wealth builds and collective possibility expands.
At the same time, the day invites all of us—whether business owners, consumers or community members—to consider how we can support entrepreneurship in ways that go beyond transactions. It asks us to imagine inclusive ecosystems: one where mentoring, funding and opportunities are open to all, one where diverse leadership is the norm, and one where business success is shared success.
- It spotlights Black-owned businesses and the unique challenges and triumphs they face
- It emphasizes the role of entrepreneurship in generational wealth-building and community uplift
- It promotes access to capital and resources for historically under-represented business owners
- It encourages mentorship, networking and collaboration across demographics
- It provides a moment to invest attention, time or resources into new or existing Black-owned ventures
How to Celebrate Black Entrepreneurs Day
Observing this day can be both straightforward and meaningful. One powerful way is to seek out and support Black-owned businesses—whether you buy a product, use a service, or refer someone. Another is to participate in an event (virtual or live) featuring Black entrepreneurs: listen, ask questions, learn. If you own a business, consider collaborating or mentoring someone from a different background.
You might also share the day’s message on social media: highlight a Black entrepreneur you admire, tag a business you love, or talk about how inclusive entrepreneurship matters. Even small gestures build community and visibility.
- Buy from a Black-owned business and ask about their story and vision
- Attend a webinar, livestream or panel led by Black entrepreneurs and take notes on what you learn
- Connect a friend or colleague with a Black-owned business they might partner with
- Share a post spotlighting a Black business owner you know and why you believe in them
- Reflect on your local business ecosystem and ask: how could I help make it more inclusive?
