Every year on 25 September, we observe World Lung Day to shine a light on lung health and the importance of healthy breathing worldwide. This observance invites us all to pause for a moment and reflect on the vital role our lungs play in daily life, and what we can do to support them.

History of World Lung Day
The observance of World Lung Day traces back to the work of the Forum of International Respiratory Societies (FIRS), which brought together national and international respiratory societies to highlight lung health as a global priority. It was created to raise awareness about the importance of healthy lungs and to advocate for better lung care, especially in areas where resources are limited.
Over time the day has grown into a global call for action—not only to prevent and treat lung‐disease, but also to shape how society recognises lung health, lung function and access to respiratory care. Each year it highlights pressing issues such as air pollution, smoking, occupational hazards, and the global burden of diseases like asthma, COPD, tuberculosis, and lung cancer.
Why is World Lung Day important?
It’s easy to take our breathing for granted—until it becomes difficult. World Lung Day reminds us that lungs do far more than carry air in and out: they support our energy, our capacity to move, our ability to recover from illness and our overall vitality. When I pause and think about that, I realise every time we take a deep, full breath we’re engaging the very infrastructure of life itself.
At the same time, this observance invites us to recognise the broader forces that influence lung health—air pollution, occupational exposures, smoking and access to healthcare. It isn’t just a personal matter; it is a collective one. By acknowledging that every breath we take connects us to our environment, to public policy and to each other, we open the door to meaningful change.
Here are some things to reflect on:
- Lungs connect us to the world through every breath we take
- Preventing lung disease early can change lives
- Access to clean air should be a basic human right
- Breathing freely is a daily gift we often overlook
- Supporting lung health means protecting our future
How to Observe World Lung Day
Observing World Lung Day can be both simple and meaningful. You might take a quiet walk outdoors, paying attention to your breathing and to the quality of the air around you. Maybe you invite a friend or family member for a gentle stretching or breathing exercise together — a reminder that lung health is something shared.
Another way: spend a few minutes assessing your own environment—are you exposed to second‑hand smoke, heavy traffic, airborne irritants, or indoor pollutants? Could you improve a window vent, keep the room fresh, or reduce exposure? Small changes add up.
Here are some friendly suggestions:
- Take a mindful breath and really notice how it feels
- Go for a walk somewhere green and peaceful
- Open windows to let in fresh air if it’s safe to do so
- Check in on loved ones who might struggle with breathing issues
- Talk about lung health with others, even just a short conversation
