These founding nations included Belarus, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Germany, Iceland, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Norway, and Sweden, all of whom sought to formalize a day that honored civil society’s role in international development.

The first global celebration took place on February 27, 2014, in Helsinki, Finland, hosted by the Finnish Ministry for Foreign Affairs. Since that time, the observance has received support from major international bodies, including the European Union and leaders within the United Nations. The date was specifically chosen to commemorate the anniversary of the 2010 forum declaration, symbolizing the unity of independent organizations across borders and their growing influence in global governance.
