History of Australian Citizenship Day
The Australian Government introduced Australian Citizenship Day in 2001 in response to a recommendation by the Australian Citizenship Council, established in 1998. The Council’s 2000 report, Australian Citizenship for a New Century, proposed an annual citizenship day to increase community awareness and provide a focal point for citizenship-related activities. The recommendation itself came from a proposal by the 1999 National Schools Constitutional Convention.
September 17 was chosen as the date because it is the anniversary of the renaming of the Nationality and Citizenship Act 1948 to the Australian Citizenship Act 1948 in 1973. The first Australian Citizenship Day was celebrated in 2001, coinciding with the Centenary of Federation. Since then, the day has been managed by the Department of Home Affairs.
Why is Australian Citizenship Day important?
Australian Citizenship Day provides an opportunity for all citizens to reflect on the shared values, rights, and responsibilities that come with being Australian. It encourages people to think about what unites Australians, take pride in the nation’s democratic values, and celebrate the role citizens play in shaping the country.
The day also highlights the contributions of new citizens. Special citizenship ceremonies and affirmation ceremonies are held across Australia, where thousands of people become Australian citizens each year. Schools, organisations, and community groups are encouraged to organise events and activities that build on civics and citizenship education.
