International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, observed annually on November 25, is dedicated to raising awareness about gender-based violence against women and calling for its prevention and elimination worldwide.

History of International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women

The date November 25 was chosen in honour of the Mirabal sisters of the Dominican Republic, who were assassinated in 1960 for their opposition to a dictatorship.
In December 1999, the United Nations General Assembly adopted Resolution 54/134 designating November 25 as the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, inviting governments, organisations and civil society to take action.

Why is International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women important?

This day draws global attention to the widespread nature of violence against women—physical, sexual, psychological—that often remains hidden or unaddressed. It underscores that violence against women is a human-rights issue, not just a private matter.
It also serves as a call to action: supporting survivors, strengthening laws and systems, shifting norms and investing in prevention. By spotlighting the issue, the day helps mobilise global solidarity and encourages concrete change.

  • It highlights the magnitude of gender-based violence around the world.
  • It reminds societies that violence against women undermines human rights and equality.
  • It prompts governments to strengthen legal protections and support for survivors.
  • It fosters global solidarity and public awareness of the issue.
  • It helps mobilise resources and activism toward prevention and systemic change.
