History of Latvia Independence Day
On November 18, 1918, the People’s Council of Latvia declared the establishment of the Republic of Latvia in the aftermath of World War I, amidst the collapse of the Russian Empire and the withdrawal of German forces. Soon afterward the country had to defend its new statehood, as the Latvian War of Independence (1918-1920) broke out, involving Soviet forces, German volunteer armies, and local conflicts.
The official recognition of Latvia by the Allied powers came in January 1921, marking the de jure status of the state. Later, Latvia endured occupations during World War II and by the Soviet Union, yet the state maintained continuity, leading to the restoration of its independence.
