National Author’s Day is observed annually on November 1. It’s a day dedicated to honouring the authors who write, share stories, create worlds, and help us understand life through the written word.

History of National Author’s Day

The idea for the day originated in 1928 when Nellie Verne Burt McPherson, then president of the Illinois Women’s Club, proposed a special day to celebrate American authors. While recovering in hospital during the First World War, McPherson had received a signed book from her favourite author, and that act of recognition inspired her. She petitioned her club, and in May 1929 the General Federation of Women’s Clubs approved a resolution to observe the day. The United States Department of Commerce officially recognised the day in 1949, further legitimising it.

Why is National Author’s Day important?

Each time we open a book, we step into another person’s voice, ideas, and world. Celebrating National Author’s Day reminds us that authors are more than writers—they are creators of empathy, knowledge, escape, and reflection. On this day I reflect on how one author’s words might have changed my view or given me solace when I needed it.
It’s also a moment to recognise that the craft of writing is often solitary, intense, and under-appreciated. Drafts, edits, rewrites, and the courage to share ideas are all part of the author’s journey. Acknowledging authors means acknowledging that dedication and inviting others to value the stories that enrich our lives.

  • It honours authors whose works inform, entertain, comfort, or challenge us
  • It reminds us to appreciate the effort, discipline, and courage behind writing
  • It encourages reading, supporting authors, and keeping the literary world alive
  • It invites us to value stories as connection between writer and reader
  • It gives an opportunity to support emerging authors and diverse voices

How to Celebrate National Author’s Day

You don’t need a big event to participate—just a book, an author, and a little intention. Start by choosing a book by an author you admire (or one you haven’t tried yet), and set aside some time to read, reflect, or even write a message of thanks to that author.
You could also engage more actively: visit a local bookstore, buy a book for a friend, leave a review online, or support an indie author. If you’re a writer yourself, it’s a perfect day to write a page, share your work, or encourage another writer in your life.

  • Write a note or message to a favourite author expressing appreciation
  • Buy a book by an author you haven’t read and explore their work
  • Share your favourite author or book on social media using #NationalAuthorsDay
  • Read for 15–30 minutes today and savour the experience of storytelling
  • If you write, draft a paragraph or short piece, honouring the author’s inspiration
