History of National Dog Dad Day
National Dog Dad Day was created by Ashley Bercaw in June 2021. Bercaw saw a need for an observance recognising the relationship between men and their dogs, particularly the idea of male dog owners treating their animals as members of the family. The observance emerged as a counterpart to celebrations centred on dog mothers and other forms of pet parenthood. 1
The relationship that the day celebrates has much deeper roots. Dogs were the first animals domesticated by humans, emerging from grey wolf populations during the last Ice Age. Research published in 2026 identified genetic evidence of domestic dogs dating back about 15,800 years and showed that dogs were already widespread across parts of Europe and Türkiye by around 14,000 years ago. Evidence from some sites also suggests close relationships with hunter-gatherers, including shared food and possible intentional burial. 2

Alex’s Take on Make Your Own Head Day
Wait a minute, this holiday is about me! My wife always calls me “daddy” and herself “mommy” for our dog. At first, it was a bit annoying. No matter how much I loved our pug, Teddy, I had to remind myself that pets are not children. But the longer we had Teddy, the more I started to enjoy my role as a dog dad. Eventually, I stopped minding the nickname.
Unfortunately, not all pet owners treat their dogs well. It breaks my heart to see dogs being mistreated (though I do give Teddy a light tap on the butt when he does something wrong, but not to hurt him, just to let him know). Seriously, think about it—many pets, especially those living in our homes, become practically part of the family. So, if someone is their dad, why shouldn’t it be us?
It’s pretty common to hear people call out to their dogs, saying “go to mommy,” but dog dads seem to be more thick-skinned, and their “fatherly instincts” take longer to develop. I think that’s why this holiday exists—to remind busy men of their role in their pet’s life. It’s not just about taking them to the vet but also about petting them, playing with them, and just being there when they need it. Remember, a dog’s life is very short—they come to us for a very brief time. Cherish these moments of closeness. Sometimes they are much more genuine than many other things in our lives.
