Each game used a different means of display, such as a panel of lights, graphical display, oscilloscope, or the DEC PDP-1 vector display.

The origin of National Video Games Day itself traces back to 1991. David Earle, president of Kid Video Warriors, submitted the date to Chase’s Calendar of Events. The first celebration was on July 8, 1991. Earle remained the sponsor through 1996, with dates varying between July 8, July 12, and September 10. Starting in 1997, the date settled on September 12, and Earle was no longer listed as sponsor. The day has since become a widely recognized celebration, though its creator remains largely unknown.
