World Walking Day
World Walking Day takes place on the first Sunday of October and is a global 24-hour relay that unites people across all time zones through physical activity. In 2026, this date falls on October 4. Organized by TAFISA, the international Sport for All association, this event invites individuals, clubs, and organizations to walk, run, cycle, dance, or move in any way they choose, passing a symbolic baton from east to west as the sun rises and sets around the world. It is a celebration of movement, community, and purpose, open to everyone regardless of age, ability, or location. 1

History of World Walking Day
World Walking Day was created by TAFISA as a worldwide 24-hour relay to promote physical activity and global unity. The event is designed so that as one time zone finishes its activity, another begins, creating a continuous journey of movement across all 24 time zones. Participants are encouraged to record a short video of their activity and share it using the hashtag #WorldWalkingDay, linking individual efforts into a single global celebration. The first documented edition attracted over 160,000 participants from more than 80 countries in 2025, demonstrating the event’s rapid growth and appeal.
The observance is held under the Patronage of UNESCO, recognizing its contribution to global unity through movement. World Walking Day also aligns with the International Olympic Committee’s Let’s Move movement and the #BeActive campaign, encouraging communities worldwide to swap screen time for shared activity. TAFISA President Janez Sodržnik and Honorary President Wolfgang Baumann have been key figures in promoting the event, inviting people everywhere to join the relay and carry the baton for causes they care about.
Why is World Walking Day important?
World Walking Day matters because it makes physical activity accessible and inclusive for everyone. The World Health Organization recommends adults get 150 to 300 minutes of moderate-intensity activity per week, and this event provides a fun, low-pressure way to start moving. Whether walking, running, or dancing, every contribution counts, and the focus is on participation, not performance. The relay format also allows individuals and communities to raise awareness for causes they care about, turning each step into a statement.
Beyond personal health, World Walking Day fosters a sense of global connection. By passing a baton across time zones, participants become part of a worldwide movement that transcends borders and cultures. It reminds us that movement is a universal language, and that even a simple walk can link us to people on the other side of the planet. The event also supports mental well-being, as regular exercise reduces stress, improves mood, and boosts creativity.
