History of Armenia Independence Day
On August 23, 1990, Armenia's Supreme Council adopted the Declaration of State Sovereignty, abolishing the Armenian SSR and establishing the Republic of Armenia. Following the failed August 1991 coup in Moscow, the government called for a referendum. On September 21, 1991, the Armenian people voted overwhelmingly to declare independence from the Soviet Union. This vote restored the independent statehood that had been lost when the First Republic of Armenia was partitioned by Soviet Russia and Turkish nationalist forces in 1920.
The independence process concluded on December 26, 1991, when the Soviet Union formally dissolved. Armenia joined the Commonwealth of Independent States shortly before that. The first president, Levon Ter-Petrosyan, was elected in November 1991. Independence Day has been celebrated every year since, with major anniversary events including military parades in Yerevan's Republic Square from 1996 to 2016, fireworks, concerts, and cultural festivals.
