The date November 25 was chosen in honour of the Mirabal sisters of the Dominican Republic, who were assassinated in 1960 for their opposition to a dictatorship.
In December 1999, the United Nations General Assembly adopted Resolution 54/134 designating November 25 as the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, inviting governments, organisations and civil society to take action.
