History of International Volunteer Day

The day was established in 1985 when the United Nations General Assembly adopted Resolution A/RES/40/212 to declare December 5 as the official day to recognize volunteerism and its contributions to social and economic development worldwide. ¹
Since then, the observance—also known as International Volunteer Day for Economic and Social Development — has provided a platform for governments, nonprofit organizations, communities and individuals to pay tribute to volunteers and inspire more people to offer their help.
