The origin of National River Day on 2 February is not recorded, and no founder or founding year has been established. The observance has nevertheless entered use among environmental and educational organisations. The National Mississippi River Museum & Aquarium has used National River Day to draw attention to the connection between land management, water quality and river conservation, while the Tidewater Council of Scouting America has marked the day with activities centred on rivers and sustainable water use. 1 2
National River Day forms part of a much longer movement to build public awareness of freshwater conservation, but it should not be confused with World Rivers Day. The latter has a documented history: Canadian river conservationist Mark Angelo founded BC Rivers Day in 1980, and its success inspired World Rivers Day in 2005 during the United Nations Water for Life Decade. The February date also coincides with World Wetlands Day, which has been observed since 1997 and marks the adoption of the Convention on Wetlands at Ramsar, Iran, on 2 February 1971. 3 4
