History of World Computer Literacy Day

World Computer Literacy Day was launched in 2001 by the Indian company NIIT to mark its 20th anniversary.
It was created in response to research showing a gender gap in computer usage, with most users being male; the aim was to encourage more inclusive access by promoting computer education particularly for children and women.

Soon after its founding, the day began to serve as a global call, encouraging not only learning basic computer skills, but also raising awareness about digital inequality and the importance of equal access to modern technology.
