In November 2019, during the catastrophic Australian bushfire season known as Black Summer, Lewis was rescued by Toni Doherty in New South Wales. She found him badly burned and took him to the Port Macquarie Koala Hospital for treatment. Despite the efforts to save him, Lewis’s injuries were too severe, and he was euthanized on November 26, 2019, marking the date for World Lewis Day.

The Australian Koala Foundation, founded on January 17, 1986, has been pivotal in koala conservation.
